RIO DE JANEIRO, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's state-owned energy company Petrobras obtained a loan of 900 million U.S. dollars from several international banks to modernize its main refineries, said the company in a statement on Tuesday.
The company said the money will be used to modernize its Valle del Paraiba refinery which is located in Sao Jose dos Campos, southeast Sao Paulo state.
The modernization of Valle del Paraiba is part of the company's strategic plan which is trying to enable the country to process heavy crude, said the statement.
Petrobras' 11 refineries were built when Brazil imported most of its oil from the Middle East, a region that produces light oil which is easier to be refined than heavy crude.
About 54 percent of the loan came from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, while the other lenders were Banespa Santander, Tokyo Mitsubishi, Caylon Investment, Societe Generale, Paribas, Standard Chartered and Sumitomo-Mitsui.
