The layout report on Jiuquan Mega Watt wind farm base has recently passed the examination of Hydropower and Water Resources Planning and Design General Institute and Jiuquan will begin to build the world’s largest wind farm base, revealed Jiuquan Jiuquan Development and Reform Committee on May 4.
Jiuquan City, at the western end of Hexi corridor, Gansu Province, is one of the regions rich in wind resource in China. Guazhou County in the city is known as “world wind storehouse” and Yumen City “wind port”. The latest evaluation result on wind energy from the meteorological departments showed that Jiuquan has a total wind reserve of 150 million KW, with a developable amount of over 40 million KW and an available land of nearly 10,000 square kilometers.
Liu Shengping, Deputy Director of Jiuquan Development and Reform Committee said that wind power generation in Jiuquan originated in 1996. Through more than 10 years of construction, 5 large-scale wind farms have been built currently with the total installed capacity of 410,000 KW. Wind power generation is one of the most mature power generation methods with the largest development scale and commercial development conditions in the renewable energy field.
Wang Jianxin, Director of Jiuquan Development and Reform Committee, showed that Gansu Provincial Government proposed the strategic thought on building Mega Watt wind farm base in Jiuquan and the goal of “building Hexi wind farm corridor and rebuilding another “Three Gorges Dam” on the western land” based on the good wind resource in Jiuquan.
According to Wang, the planned total installed capacity of wind turbines in Jiuquan wind farm base is 35.65 million KW, with an installed capacity of 10.65 million KW built for the preliminary period. Spokesman from NDRC believed that the planning Mega Watt wind farm base in Jiuquan is the first in its kind in the world.
According to Liu Shengping’s calculation, to build the Mega Watt wind farm base in Jiuquan needs a total commercial investment of 110 billion yuan-120 billion yuan. At present, the rich wind energy resource in Jiuquan has attracted more than 20 large-scale domestic enterprises for investigation and investment.
The city is implementing the target of building coal-power bases step by step and plans to reach the installed capacity of 13.6 million KW by 2020, revealed Wang.
