A wetland of international standing will get an inflow of more than 600 megalitres from the Murray late this month.
Banrock Station in the South Australian Riverland is listed under the Ramsar international wetlands treaty.
The site has been disconnected from the river since the start of last year to save water during prolonged drought.
Murray-Darling Basin Commission chief executive, Wendy Craik, says the partial refill will prevent damage to the wetland''s plants and animals from increasing salinity.
Dr Craik says Banrock Station has international environmental significance.
"The vegetation hasn''t had a decent drink and saline groundwater''s starting to rise to the surface and threaten the vegetation," she said.
"So we''re really trying to maintain the environment as best we can in that area so the Commission through the Living Murray Water [Recovery Program] and Banrock Station itself are putting in some water to partially re-wet the wetland."
