It’s learned from China Three Gorges Project Corporation that by 12:00 on May 9, Three Gorges Project (hereafter referred to as “TGP”) has generated a total of 223 billion KWH clean hydroelectricity. Together with reduced energy consumption in shipping and increased freight after the Three Gorges Reservoir is put into operation, the project can save more than 90 million tons of standard coal equivalent and reduce 200 million tons of CO2 equivalent for the nation, which fully shows its functions of energy saving and emission reduction.
Since TGP, the world's largest water conservancy hinge project began sluice and opened to navigation, 22 sets of 700,000 KW power generating units have successively been put into operation. The hinge has been in operation for nearly 5 years.
It’s estimated that since the first power generation unit was put into operation on July 10th, 2003, the accumulative electricity generated is equivalent to saving 84 million tons of standard coal, reducing 190 million tons of CO2, 2.29 million tons of SO2, and 980,000 tons of nitrogen oxide emission.
The total freight volume for TGP between 2004 and 2007 is 198 million tons. After Three Gorges Reservoir began sluice, Chuanjiang River Route has been improved obviously with shipping capacity sextupled and shipping cost reduced by 1/4. Compared with before, the total energy consumption in shipping has been reduced by about 280,000 tons of standard coal, equivalent to reducing
630,000 tons of CO2 emission. Compared with the ever largest freight volume of 18 million tons when it was not open to navigation, the freight volume for TGP between 2004 and 2007 adds up to 126 million tons. Compared with energy consumption for road transport, it can save about 4.1 million tons of standard coal equivalent and reduce about 10 million tons of CO2 emission.
China Three Gorges Project Corporation is searching solutions to the joint optimizing and scheduling of TGP and Gezhouba Project, 38km downstream of the former, to increase power generating volume. In 2007,TGP-Gezhouba Hinge generated 77.066 billion KWH of electricity, equivalent to saving 29 million tons of standard coal and reducing 66 million tons of CO2 emission. The hinge generated 3.96 billion KWH of additional electricity. And water utilization efficiency for Three Gorges Power Plant and Gezhouba Power Plant is up 4.5% and 8.7% respectively.
The construction of TGP has further improved China's energy structure and relieved the pressure of China on energy saving and emission reduction, and response to climate change. Units with 15.4 million KW in installed capacity have been put into production, equivalent to 10% of China’s hydropower capacity. Measures on pollution control and water and soil conservation stipulated in the national approved documents have been fully implemented around the construction sites. It was approved the national 5A-level scenic spot last year.
