Coal & Power News Review(1-22-2013)

2013-01-22 10:23:00

According to data recently released at the State Electricity Regulatory Commission website, daily generating capacity continued to remain high since the New Year, reaching 15.313 billion kWh on the 4th of January, exceeding the record generating capacity of 15.281 billion kWh on the 12th of July, 2012. The data show that the country's highest daily electric power generated reached 676.59 million kilowatts, exceeding the highest electricity power generation in 2012.The power load on the Central China Power Grid and the Northwest Power Grid both reached historical heights of 130.28 million kilowatts, and 54.05 million kilowatts respectively.

Experts pointed out that the slowdown in economic growth in 2012 led to a downturn in the year-on-year growth in annual power generation. However power production and other economic data at the beginning of 2013 have been gratifying. Demand for power is expected to pick up strongly, also indicating a positive growth trend.
The SERC statistics show that in 2012, China has added new power generation capacity of 80 million kilowatts with the total installed power capacity of over 1.14 billion kilowatts, an increase of 7.5% from the same time last year.

Before October 2012, the whole society was experiencing a moderate slow-down in the growth rate of electricity consumption, which began to rise in October. Since the last third of November, the average temperature across China reached the lowest in the past 28 years. As a result, national electricity consumption grew substantially.
According to the prediction in the research report by the State Grid Energy Research Institute, the total electricity consumption across China will reach 5.3-5.4 trillion kWh in 2013, an increase of 7.0% -9.0%. In the case of extreme weather conditions, localized power shortage cannot be ruled out.
