The latest data released by the National Energy Board show that according to preliminary survey, China has become the world's Number 1 energy-producing country by the end of 2012. Nationwide installed power capacity reached 1.14 billion kilowatts. Hydropower installed capacity reached 249 million kilowatts, ranking first in the world. Wind power installed capacity reached 63 million kilowatts, making it the world's number one wind power country. Photovoltaic power installed capacity reached 700 million kilowatts. Nuclear power construction scale ranks the first in the world.

The National Energy Work Conference was held in Beijing on the 7th of January. In terms of additional installed capacity, the conference proposed to add 18 million Kw in wind power, 10 million Kw in photovoltaic power in 2013. It reiterated their support for strong development of distributed photovoltaic power generation. The conference also proposed to deepen the reform of the energy system in 2013, to conduct in depth study in the top-level design and overall planning in the reform of energy system, to clarify an overall reform plan, a road map and a timetable, and actively carry out pilot demonstration schemes.

The Ministry of Finance website announced the Notification on the Publication of Additional Funds for Renewable Energy Tariff Subsidies Directory (Batch 3) on the 7th of January, with a total of 496 projects in 19 provinces receiving subsidies. This is a big expansion over the batch of 220, and the second batch 415 projects. Wind power projects account for 377 out of the 496 projects, exceeding three quarters. 62 and 57 solar and biomass power generation projects were selected respectively. Solar power projects have greatly increased, as the first two batches of the directory mainly consist of wind power and biomass power projects.
Inner Mongolia has most projects compared with other provinces and autonomous regions, accounting for a quarter of the total. Other provinces with large number of selected projects are concentrated in the Northeast and the Northwest of China. The main beneficiaries of the subsidies include Guodian, Huaneng, Datang, Huadian, each has 83, 58, 55, and 21 projects receiving the subsidies.
